Sound Space Programs
Sound Space pilot program, Spring 2024
During our pilot program, 14 children were introduced to basic choral singing and music concepts, played rhythm and pitch games, and learned a variety of folk songs. We partnered with JB Brayfindley, who accompanied the folk songs on keyboard and taught students African drumming songs. They performed to a full house of families and friends on Sunday afternoon, April 14, 2024.
Sound Space partners with Arts Council, Summer 2024
The Colusa County Arts Council and Sound Space partnered in July 2024 to present a Performing Arts Camp for 25 children, ages 5 to 13, featuring dance, music, and drama. Our theme was “Seasons.” Each day at camp featured a seasonal song that children could sing, strum, ring, or drum; a different style of dance; and a different aspect of drama (mime, puppeteering, etc.)
Sound Space Session Early Fall 2024
This short session focused on simple ukelele chords that could accompany familiar songs. Ukelele instructor Adam Dragoo from the Colusa County Arts Council taught chords and strumming techniques; rhythm instruments were added in as well.
Break, Late Fall 2024
During late fall, Sound Space took a break,
so interested youth had the opportunity to join the Community Christmas Choir, which also practices on Wednesdays. Three Sound Space youth joined the adult choir and performed, including solos, for four shows
in Colusa County!
Sound Space Session Winter-Spring 2025
In partnership with accompanist Cynthia White, we presented “Character Matters,” a 30-minute musical from Bad Wolf Press. Led by a Handsome Prince and a (recovering) Wicked Witch, the Fairy Tale Advice Council offers help in character-building to famous folk creatures. Children gained confidence as soloists and performed to a full house. They also gained skills with props, staging, and costumes.
Sound Space Session Spring 2025
Students learned rhythm and techniques for ringing handchimes. They performed classic and popular pieces at their May 2025 concert.
Sound Space partners with Arts Council, Summer 2025
The Colusa County Arts Council and Sound Space partnered again in July 2025 to present a Performing Arts Camp for children ages 5 to 13, featuring dance, music, and drama. Our theme was “Animals.” Each day at camp featured song, dance, and drama. The children performed as the opening act for Thursday night Music in the Park.
Sound Space Session Early Fall 2025
This short session, “Dance Colusa,” focused on dance. Students learned to move along with song, enjoying three genres.
Sound Space Session Fall 2025
Sing y Canta! gave children an opportunity to sing in both Spanish and English. They also learned skills in combining vocals with recorder tunes. The fall performance was well attended.
Sound Space Session Winter 2026
We’ve chosen another winner from Bad Wolf Press, a children’s musical called “The Garden Show.” “The Garden Show” is an amusing 30-minute musical with catchy tunes and clever lyrics. When aliens from planet Chlorophyll land in a garden on planet Earth, they meet some new friends who teach them all about it. They (and your students!) learn about soil, photosynthesis, pollination, and the creatures who call the garden home. It also teaches some great lessons about helping and welcoming strangers. This is a great performance opportunity for kids to come sing a solo, be part of the chorus, and help with staging and costumes.
